A 21 km (6 -7 hours) walk along a stage of the Historical Way through the hills between Santiago do Cacém and Vale Seco. Your accommodation for the night is in the converted mill buildings of the 19th century twin windmills, Moinhos do Paneiro, directly on the trai, where you can enjoy a dip in the swimming pool after your walkl.

Day three: Vale Seco to Cercal do Alentejo. A 20 km (5 - 5½ hours) walk passing Campilhas Dam & Reservoir on what is considered to be the most arrid stage of the Historical Way. The night will be spent at an art nouveau style guesthouse in the centre of the village.

Day four: Cercal do Alentejo to São Luis. A 21 km (6-7 hours) through the "serras" with views to the coast and inland over the Alentejo plains. The night will be spent at a rural guesthouse in a typical Alentejano style farmhouse just outside the village, where you can enjoy a dip in the swimming pool after your walk.

Day five: São Luis to Odemira. A 25 km (7-8 hours) walk known as the water section of the Historical Way, where there is an optional but recommended side trail to Pego da Pias pools. The night will be spent at a family owned pension in the centre of Odemira .

Day six: Odemira to São Teotónio. A 19km (6 hours) walk , for much of the route, the trail follows the River Mira and the River S. Teotonio along wide trails. The night will be spent in a small hotel on the edge of the town.

Day seven: São Teotónio to Odeceixe. A 17 km (5½-6 hours) walk along some inhospitable but truly memorable trails to the Algarve village of Odeceixe. You will spend the night at a small guest house close to the village centre.

Day eight: After breakfast depart from Odeceixe.

Pego das Pias

An extra night at Santiago do Cacém, before the start of the main walking programme, is recommended. This will give you the opportunity to visit the town's castle and stroll around the historic centre at leisure, as well as take a circular walk to the ruins of the Roman town of Mirobriga.

Or, you could spend an extra night at Odeceixe to be able to take a 13km circular walk from the village along a short section of the Historical Way and returning to the village via northernmost loop of the Fishermen's Trail in the Algarve.

A rest day mid way through the programme at the guest house in São Luis, where you can relax around the pool and take in the views of the "serra".
