Itinerary (click walk name to view gallery).

Day one: Arrival in the Alentejo to spend the next two nights near the village of São Luís at a rural guest house with use of swimming pool, where you can relax on the terrace and take in the wonderful views of the Serra.

Day two: Welcome meeting after breakfast before the start of an 8km (2½ - 3 hours) circular walk from São Luís to São Domingos hill, with its spectacular views, on the Historical Way (São Luís to Cercal stage) and back to the village via the “Hortas de São Luís” local walk. You can then relax around the pool in the afternoon.

Day three: Continue on the Historical Way São Luís to Cercal stage on a 16km walk (5 - 5½ hours) through the hills with views over the coastal plain and the “Alentejo montado”. You will spend the next two nights in an Art Nouveau-style inn featuring traditional Alentejo-style décor near the centre of Cercal do Alentejo.

Day four: A restful day in the sleepy town of Cercal do Alentejo.

Day five: 14 km walk (3½-4 hours) along the Historical Way from Cercal do Alentejo to the Atlantic coast, where there are views of Ilha do Pessegueiro (Peach Tree Island). Here you can take some refreshments in the café overlooking the island while you wait for your transfer to Porto Covo, where you will spend the next two nights in a small inn on the main street off the village square.

Day six: An 8 km circular walk (2 - 2½ hours), firstly along a section of the Fishermen's Trail towards Ilha do Pessegueiro, and then returning to the village on a section of the Historical Way, passing a Bronze Age burial site. From Porto Covo harbour you can take a boat trip to Ilha do Pessegueiro or you can go horse riding at a farm just to the south of the village.

Day seven: Transfer after breakfast to the Forte Ilha do Dentro, from where you will continue south along the Fishermen's Trail for 14km (4½-5 hours) to Porto das Barcas fishing harbour near Vila Nova de Milfontes, from where you will be transferred to your hotel overlooking the Mira estuary, where you will spend the next two nights in a room with a balcony and sea view. The hotel also has a swimming pool.

Day eight: A rest day in Vila Nova de Milfontes, which has lots to offer with its beaches and pavement cafés. You could take a trip up the River Mira on a traditional style boat or hire a canoe and tackle it under your own steam.

Day nine: After breakfast you will be taken by boat across the River Mira, before continuing along the Fishermen's Trail on an 11km (3 - 3½ hours) walk to Almograve, where you will spend the next two nights at a delightful guest house, with swimming pool, situated just behind the sand dunes.

Day ten: After breakfast you will be transferred to the village of Cavaleiro, from where you will walk 10km (3 - 3½ hours) north to Almograve along the Fishermen's Trail.

Day eleven: After breakfast you will be transferred to the village of Cavaleiro, from where you will walk 12km (3 - 3½ hours) to Zambujeira do Mar along the Fishermen's Trail passing the historic lighthouse at Cabo Sardão, where storks' nests can be seen from the cliff tops. You will spend the next two nights at a small guest house close to the village centre.

Day twelve: After breakfast you will be transferred to the Ceixe river estuary for a 14 km walk (4½ - 5 hours) north along the Fishermen's Trail back to Zambujeira do Mar, passing the fishing village of Azenha do Mar.

Day thirteen: After breakfast, depart from Zambujeira do Ma. We offer a complimentary taxi transfer to São Teotonio, where there are better public transport connections.
