Castle to Cape - Inland

From Castle to Cape - 13 days - 11 walks.

Self-guided walking on the Historical Way of the Rota Vicentina from Santiago do Cacém Castle to Cape St Vincent.

Signage

This programme covers all of the Historical Way stages in the Alentejo and Algarve. At times, during the eleven days in the serra, you will be tempted by the views of the Atlantic, as the trail meanders through the forests, river valleys and over the serras, home to wild boar and mongooses, whilst passing sleepy inland Alentejano villages where life continues at an almost sedentary pace. Once in the western Algarve, the pace of life is much the same. On the final walk you will reach Portugal's land's end.

The trail itself is an incredible sensory experience, with abundant animal and plant life with a multitude of colours, shades and fragrances and varied geological phenomenon. The forests display the changing colours of the cork oak trees, vast arrays of white cistus flowers and the flowers and fruits of the strawberry tree, the fruiy of which is used to make the local firewater, Aguardente de Medronho or the sweet less potent Licor de Medronho.

Pego das Pias

An extra night at Santiago do Cacém, before the start of the main walking programme, is recommended. This will give you the opportunity to visit the town's castle and stroll around the historic centre at leisure, as well as take a circular walk to the ruins of the Roman town of Mirobriga.

Rest days can be arranged at any location.

Spend one or more nights in Lagos at the end of the programme.
