Self-guided walking from Santiago do Cacém to Odeceixe and back to Cercal via Porto Covo.
Itinerary (click walk name to view gallery).
Day one: Arrival in the Alentejo. Overnighting in the town of Santiago do Cacém at a guesthouse close to the historical centre and the northern starting point of the Rota Vicentina.
Day two: Welcome meeting after breakfast at your guest house before the first walk from Santiago do Cacém to Vale Seco. A 21 km (6 -7 hours) walk along a stage of the Historical Way through the hills between Santiago do Cacém and Vale Seco. Your accommodation for the night is in the converted mill buildings of the 19th century twin windmills, Moinhos do Paneiro, directly on the trail, where you can enjoy a dip in the swimming pool after your walk.
Day three: Vale Seco to Cercal do Alentejo. A 20 km (5 - 5½ hours) walk passing Campilhas Dam & Reservoir on what is considered to be the most arrid stage of the Historical Way. The night will be spent at an art nouveau style guesthouse in the centre of the village.
Day four: Cercal do Alentejo to São Luis. A 21 km (6-7 hours) through the "serras" with views to the coast and inland over the Alentejo plains. The next two nights will be spent at a rural guesthouse in a converted Alentejano farm just outside the village.
Day five: A rest day in São Luis, where you can relax on the lawns around the swimming pool.
Day six: São Luis to Odemira. A 25 km (7-8 hours) walk known as the water section of the Historical Way, where there is an optional but recommended side trail to Pego da Pias pools. The night will be spent at a family owned pension in the centre of Odemira .
Day seven: Odemira to São Teotónio. A 19km (6 hours) walk , for much of the route, the trail follows the River Mira and the River S. Teotonio along wide trails. The night will be spent in a small hotel on the edge of the town
Day eight: São Teotónio to Odeceixe. A 17 km (5½-6 hours) walk along some inhospitable but truly memorable trails to the Algarve village of Odeceixe. You will spend the night at a small guest house close to the village centre.
Day nine: Odeceixe to Zambujeira do Mar. An 18 km (5½-6 hours) walk along a coastal path, visiting the fishing village of Azenha do Mar. You will spend the night at a small guest house close to the village centre.
Day ten: Zambujeira do Mar to Almograve. A 21km (6-7 hours) walk heading north to Almograve, passing through the village of Cavaleiro and the historic Cabo Sardão lighthouse. You will spend the next two nights at a delightful guest house situated just behind the sand dunes.
Day eleven: A rest day in Almograve, where you can relax around the pool or on the beach.
Day twelve: Almograve to Vila Nova de Milfontes. A 15 km (4½-5 hours) easy walk continuing on the Fishermen's Trail along the coast. You will spend the night at a small hotel near to the old historic centre of the village, close to the castle with views over the river estuary.
Day thirteen: Vila Nova de Milfontes to Porto Covo. A 20 km (6-7 hours) hike heading to the northernmost point of the Fishermen's Trail. The night will be spent at a small inn in the main street off the village square.
Day fourteen: Porto Covo to Cercal do Alentejo. An 18 km (4½- 5 hour) walk along a stage connecting the Fishermen's Trail to the Historical Way. Your accommodation for the night is an Art Nouveau-style inn featuring traditional Alentejo-style décor near the centre of the town.
Day fifteen: After breakfast, depart from Cercal do Alentejo.
An extra night at Santiago do Cacém, before the start of the main walking programme, is recommended. This will give you the opportunity to visit the town's castle and stroll around the historic centre at leisure, as well as take a circular walk to the ruins of the Roman town of Mirobriga.
Or, you could spend an extra night at Odeceixe to be able to take a 13km circular walk from the village along a short section of the Historical Way and returning to the village via northernmost loop of the Fishermen's Trail in the Algarve.
Additional rest days can be arranged at any location.
