Alentejo...

... the land of wide open spaces.

Minas

Alentejo.

Lying right at the country’s heart, the Alentejo has served as Portugal’s breadbasket and seduces with its slow pace, a sense of modern times at a sedentary pace.

Beyond the coastal region that has recently become a magnet for foreign tourists, there is a vast region waiting to be explored by intrepid travellers.

TransAlentejo Map

The TransAlentejo project offers eleven walking trails located in the region influenced by the Alqueva Lake and the Guadiana River, in areas of special protection in terms of the by-laws of nature conservation.

The trails, which are predominantly circular in nature, were chosen from among several that each represented municipality had within its territory, each of which has been duly recognised and has undergone an exhaustive survey of the main points of interest.

Pulo do Lobo

The town of Mertola and its surrounding territrory lies next to the border with Spain. Here the influences of the moorish occupation from centuries ago can still be felt.

The municipality of Mertola offers a number of circular walking trails, one of which is part of the Transalentejo initiative to make this region more accessible for visitors.

Other trails are linear in nature but can easily be walked there and back within an afternoon.

Guadiana

Natural Parks.

Besides the 110 kms of wild coastline and 75 thousand hectares of protected area within Sw Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, to the far east of the region there is the Guadiana Valley Natural Park which covers almost 70 thousand hectares.

Some of the TransAlentejo and Mertola walking trails lie within this vast natural park.
